Jewish News Today: UK Cuts Diplomatic Presence in Jerusalem, Vigil Disrupted in New York, and Minnesota Teen Arrested in Plot Targeting Mall Over Jewish Owners
On the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks, the Jewish diaspora confronted a series of jarring developments: Britain formally reduced its diplomatic footprint in Jerusalem after a sanctions row with Israel, a peace vigil in New York City was overrun by pro-Palestinian protesters as Mayor Zohran Mamdani's October 7 statement drew fierce condemnation from Jewish groups, and a Minnesota teenager was arrested for allegedly planning an ISIS-style attack on a shopping mall because of its Jewish owners. Three years on, the events of October 7 continue to reverberate through Jewish communities across the world.
Britain Reduces Diplomatic Presence in Jerusalem
In a significant diplomatic rupture, Israel has downgraded the UK's Jerusalem consulate to a smaller diplomatic mission, according to both JNS and the Jewish Chronicle. Twenty British diplomats will leave Israel; seven will remain under an agreement that pauses further retaliation while talks continue, JNS reported. Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated that it was "not possible to act against Israel without Israel taking appropriate measures in response," according to the Jewish Chronicle. The move comes in direct response to British sanctions on Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.
Speaking to JNS, Sa'ar warned that Israel faces "difficult diplomatic years" ahead and urged national unity, adding that violence in Judea and Samaria is damaging ties with Israel's closest friends. For British Jews, the breakdown in UK-Israel relations — on the very anniversary of the Hamas massacre — represents a painful widening of a rift that has been building since October 7, 2023.
In a related development, the Jewish Chronicle reported that the Liberal Democrats have been warned over the "implications" of local government coalitions with the Green Party, following the Greens' adoption of a controversial "Zionism is racism" motion. The warning signals growing unease within British Jewish communities about the direction of mainstream British politics.
London Vigil and Anti-Israel Marches on Anniversary
Britain's Jewish leaders gathered near 10 Downing Street on the third anniversary to declare "we stand with Israel," the Jewish Chronicle reported. The event drew community members from across the country for a moment of solidarity.
But the day also saw anti-Israel protesters march through London. Police made eleven arrests at demonstrations on the anniversary, according to the Jewish Chronicle. The Jüdische Allgemeine reported that in Berlin, climate activist Greta Thunberg joined a similar demonstration on the anniversary, marching alongside individuals the publication described as terror supporters and opponents of Israel. Separately, Berlin also held candlelight memorial services for the victims of the Hamas attack, with people embracing and weeping, the Jüdische Allgemeine reported.
New York: Vigil Overrun, Mamdani Under Fire
In New York City, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters overran a peace vigil marking October 7 that was attended by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, according to the Forward and JTA. The vigil had been organised by the left-wing group Israelis for Peace. Demonstrators mocked and yelled at participants, JTA reported.
Mamdani's October 7 statement — his first as New York City mayor — mourned Israeli victims and the 251 people taken hostage, but also described Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide," according to the Forward. Jewish groups condemned the remarks sharply. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter, speaking from the bedside of his son who is on life support following a terror attack, told JNS: "It's actually hard to find a sentence in Mamdani's post that isn't a lie." Israeli Consul General Akunis again invited Mamdani to a screening of October 7 footage, saying: "Anyone with a heart should be ashamed of the response of the mayor of New York City to the Oct. 7 massacre," according to JNS.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul took a markedly different tone, ordering flags lowered and landmarks lit yellow on the anniversary. "The pain of that dark day has not faded," she said, according to JNS. "But neither has the strength, resilience and enduring hope of the Jewish people."
Minnesota Teen Arrested Over Plot Targeting Mall Due to Jewish Owners
The FBI arrested a Minnesota teenager who allegedly planned an ISIS-style attack on the Mall of America because of its Jewish owners, JNS reported. Seamus Hughes, a senior researcher at the University of Nebraska Omaha, told JNS that "ISIS still has a resonance with a small subsection of Americans." The arrest is a stark reminder to diaspora communities that antisemitic violence motivated by hatred of Jewish ownership and identity remains a live threat inside Western countries.
Campus Antisemitism: Swarthmore Probe Expanded, Parsons Lawsuit, Jewish Student Protections
The Trump administration said it is expanding its investigation into alleged antisemitism at Swarthmore College, now including a student group that shared a video of an Israeli being burned in effigy, JNS reported. "If Swarthmore has in fact turned a blind eye to such provocation, using the most horrific acts of violence against Jews since the Holocaust as a propaganda tool, someone is asleep at the wheel," a Department of Education official said, according to JNS.
Separately, a Jewish student suing New York's Parsons School of Design faced antisemitism "in every form you can imagine," including being chased, pushed, shoved, spat on, and blocked from entering a building, her lawyer told JNS. The Israeli-American Council told JNS that October 7 cannot become "an annual day Jewish students must negotiate for ability to mourn," with spokesperson Sagit Sade Attia stating: "We are not asking universities to suppress speech. We are asking them to govern their campuses." The US Department of Education also urged schools and legislators to protect Jewish students amid October 7 walkouts.
A Haverford College professor was separately accused of threatening and stalking a Jewish person online, JTA reported. Guangtian Ha had previously been named in a 2024 antisemitism lawsuit against the school.
Iran Celebrates, Retired US Military Rebut Genocide Claims
Iran's state broadcaster marked the third anniversary of October 7 by describing the Hamas attacks as "the first phase of the total elimination of Israel," the Jewish Chronicle reported. The declaration serves as a reminder to diaspora communities of the openly eliminationist ideology state actors continue to promote.
Against that backdrop, more than 70 retired US military leaders — the precise number was cited in the JNS source — rejected genocide allegations against Israel, stating that "protecting civilians and preserving the ability of our nation to defend itself requires us to defend the truth when the laws of war are being distorted to make false charges of genocide."
Nova Survivors Still Struggling Three Years On
For survivors of the Nova music festival massacre, the trauma has not receded. JNS reported that SafeHeart, an Israeli mental-health support non-profit, found that 79 per cent of survivors it works with have been recognised as having a psychiatric disability, with many struggling to return to work three years on.
In Tel Aviv, some 50,000 Israelis filled Yarkon Park for a bereaved families' memorial ceremony, the Forward reported. "Every day is Oct. 7. Still," one bereaved mother said.
UN Secretary-General Race: Jewish Candidate Still Leads
Rebeca Grynspan, a Jewish politician, remains the frontrunner to become the next UN Secretary-General after winning four of five straw polls, JNS reported. However, her "negative" votes doubled in the most recent round on Wednesday, leaving the race still open.
What This Means for the Jewish Diaspora
Three years after the worst antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust, the Jewish diaspora faces a landscape that has shifted significantly in ways both alarming and, in places, encouraging. British Jews find themselves caught between a deteriorating UK-Israel relationship and the threat of political normalisation of anti-Zionist positions in mainstream parties. American Jews face a campus environment in which the anniversary of a massacre has become contested ground. In Germany, memorial candles were lit even as Greta Thunberg marched alongside those the Jüdische Allgemeine described as Israel's enemies. The Jüdische Allgemeine also published a German commentary on the anniversary calling for genuine legal protection for Jews in Germany without resort to exceptional measures — a debate that reflects how unsettled the question of Jewish security in Europe remains. Across the diaspora, the third anniversary has made clear that October 7 is not receding into history. For Jewish communities, it remains the present.
