Jewish News Today: German Military Base Threatens Lithuanian Forest Where Jewish Partisans Fought the Nazis
Construction of a German military base in Lithuania's Rūdninkai Forest is putting at risk the bunkers where Jewish partisans resisted the Nazis. JTA also told the story of EL AL's wartime resilience and of Ethiopian asylum seekers in Israel fighting deportation.
Rūdninkai Forest: Partisan Bunkers at Risk
Some 400 Jews escaped the Vilnius ghetto to Lithuania's Rūdninkai Forest under German occupation and organised attacks against the Nazis from underground bunkers, JTA reported. Construction of a new German military base in the area now puts the fate of the forts in question, and signs forbidding entry have appeared on the road to the site, which descendants of the partisans have visited for decades.
EL AL's Wartime Story
JTA published the story of how Israel's national airline operated through the war, including staff who supported families of hostages taken on October 7, JTA reported.
Ethiopian Asylum Seekers Fight Deportation
Ethiopian asylum seekers who have lived in Israel for years without permanent status are fighting deportation efforts, JTA reported in a story supported by the Pulitzer Center.
